Early Life

Kerkove was born on Juni 21, 10514, in Halberd, Zierathdom. His father was a licensed hunter in the Forest of Zierath, and his mother was one of the caretakers of the Halberd Central Niurb Tree.

Kerkove was a very multi-talented young man and showed great promise in letters and drawing. He excelled in his schooling and entered the University of Zierath majoring in scribe. After his apprenticeship, he entered into the service of the Zierathan Alliance Documents Department as an associate scribe.

Awakening

Despite his ability to focus in on a task, Kerkove found himself getting bored with the constant recopying in the scribes’ pen. To help himself focus more effectively, he taught himself how to juggle. On Ronolom 17, 10534, Kerkove focused so much energy on the juggling balls that the balls start to juggle themselves, and he triggered his Awakening. The balls juggle themselves for 513 years. The day they stop juggling – Yakuter 13 – became a national day of mourning for Zierathdom.

Training

Kerkove began his training with Zierath. From 10534 until 10600, Kerkove remained with Zierath. He spent from 10600 until 10700 with Queen Melanie on Hoffner. At that time, Zierath and the Karland split their countries into smaller sections and gave Kerkove control over the new province of Erikdom.

Erikdom

Like his two mentors, Kerkove was a teacher. He set up many schools, improving the Zierathan and Huntian models. His art academies were second to none. From 10700 until 11150, he was the Imrhys Finder; when new Imrhys appeared on the Scottish continent, he was the Imrhys lord to go track them down and bring them back to Castle Zierath to begin training. Among the Fifth Age Imrhys that he found were Kuker, Braithe and Xiola. He was also a teacher of the Lealundian Imrhys Carlin starting in 10900 when Carlin entered Zierath’s service.

Westmar

In 11150, Kerkove joined Queen Melanie and Prince Thom of Hoffner on a trip to see the Crossing, the homeland of the First Nine Imrhys. While they are there, DeeDee, Czarina of Deanne finds Melanie and tells her of Westmar, the mad Imrhys on the island continent directly north of her. She tells them that Westmar is practicing genocide, and where once more than a score of sentient races lived, only five remained on the continent – the white ursans, the tigrans, the lobos, the rhys, and humans. DeeDee begged Melanie, Thom, and Kerkove to join her in defeating Westmar.

In 11186, Kerkove, Melanie, Thom, and DeeDee traveled to Westmark. They discovered that the genocide had progressed since DeeDee went for help. The Rhys and the Lobos have only a few villages left, and most of the survivors were being hunted down by Westmar’s human and tigran hunters. The four Imrhys and the Deannien army battle the hunters and Westmark’s army in an attempt to save the few remaining Lobos and Rhys. They are joined by elements of the Tigran, Ursan, and Human populations as well in a civil war against Westmar.

Leaving Thom in charge of the army and the war, DeeDee, Melanie, Kerkove, and a small army platoon circled behind Westmar and challenged him in his own command center. His loyal bodyguard engaged the platoon, while DeeDee, Melanie, and Kerkove focused in on Westmar himself. In the fight, Kerkove right eye is damaged, Melanie’s knees are shattered, and DeeDee is nearly killed. As Westmar is trying to burn the czarina with his magic, Kerkove leapt on to Westmar’s back and shot a lightning bolt through the king’s head.

Rather than killing the Imrhys, Kerkove drove the insanity out of Westmar’s mind. Westmar realized what he had done. He sent out a wave of energy that healed all the wounds on every living thing on the continent. The feat burnt out Westmar’s magical abilities. As he lay dying, Westmar commanded Kerkove to rule over Westmark. Kerkove swore to do so, and Westmar died in Kerkove’s arms.

Kerkove had Melanie and Thom take word back to Zierath and went about rebuilding the continent. Despite his wishes, the sentient population renamed the country Kerkovia.

The Diamond Sabre

In 11200, Colletta, the Administrator of Hovde and the wielder of the Diamond Sabre arrived at Kerkovia’s palace. She told the king that the Diamond Sabre had told her that she was to pass the Item of Light on to him.

Kerkovia

Kerkove spent millennia rebuilding the civilization that Westmar had destroyed. His monarchist republican government built schools and started to reintroduce other races to Kerkovia, although most of the new races stayed close to the sea. The center of the isles was still dominated by Tigran and Human clans.

As he did in the Zierathan Alliance, Kerkove trained newly Awakened Imrhys and worked to build friendly relations with the neighboring countries and their rulers. He took Imrhys healer Chrissal under his wing, and also Ryan the All-Bright. After training them, he followed Zierath’s example and broke off a part of his land and gave it to them to rule. Lightlund became a second major country on the island continent.

Lemark

In 12832, Kerkove received word that the clan base of the Imiati vampires had been found on Lamark Island, a small island between Kerkovia and Deanne. More importantly, the father of the Imiati, Gyshouto himself, was on the island. Kerkove contacted DeeDee, Czarina of Deanne, and the Stone Rook, ruler of the Stone Rookery. They coordinated a massive attack on the island. On Ronolom 1, the combined forces of Kerkovia, Deanne, and the Stone Rookery invaded Lemark Island. Almost every vampire on the island was destroyed. Gyshouto was killed by a crossbow bolt shot by DeeDee, and Kerkove destroys Gyshouto’s first children – Brymiel and Allisindra.

In 12855, Kerkove found another Imrhys, Andreea, in the southeastern corner of the island country.

The Fourth Gnarrhys War

In 13708, Kerkove was deeply involved in the Fourth Gnarrhys War. The first three books – Castle Zierath, The Basalt Mace, and The Stone Dees – cover this time period.
